MR Side Chair Rattan - Knoll

The MR collection of the Knoll furniture firm is made up of several pieces designed by the architect and designer Mies Van der Rohe, one of the most important figures in the history of design and architecture, known for his minimalism, a concept that he transferred to his furniture pieces such as the MR Side Chair by Knoll in which a subtle chrome steel metal structure and a comfortable Curved seat made of natural rattan.

History of the MR Side Chair without Arms in Knoll:

The origins of the bent steel cantilever chair are somewhat murky, but usually three names come up in the discussion. Marcel Breuer is widely recognized as a pioneer in the exploration of the material, Mart Stam seems to be the first to conceive of a "chair without hind legs", and Mies van der Rohe is remembered as the one who made it beautiful.

Mart Stam is believed to have described his idea, a continuous loop of steel (he used a thinner gauge gas pipe in early versions) with a cantilevered seat, at a Werkbund meeting in 1926. Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe attended, who were inspired to design their own cantilever chairs in the coming months. Mies replaced the right angles of the front legs with an elegant curve that had the advantage of increasing elasticity and preventing fatigue from the material.

Mies first showed the MR 10 and MR20 at the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart, a seminal exhibition of the Werkbund, which first brought modernist works to the public, with buildings designed by Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and others.
