The Straight chair is the modernist interpretation of the classic Windsor chair. Nakashima mixes Eastern and Western aesthetics, traditional and modern vocabulary, George Nakashima's work defies typical categorization. He is one of the most recognized artisans of the 20th century, mainly for his handmade furniture and sensitivity to raw materials.
In the early 1940s, Hans and Florence Knoll meet Nakashima, who, impressed by the simple elegance of his aesthetic, include a chair and three tables of his design in the Knoll catalog. The first orders were placed in Nakashima's own studio. Production was discontinued in 1955, when Nakashima opted to produce and market all of his designs himself. In collaboration with George Nakashima's daughter, Mira and George Nakashima Studios, KnollStudio reproduces it with the use of three-dimensional scanning software, creating an exact replica of the original handmade since 2008. Nakashima's pieces epitomize the designer, his art, and craftsmanship.
