The Akari YA2 Vitra lamp was designed by Isamu Noguchi and belongs to the Vitra collection of Akari Light Sculptures: a product line with more than 100 original lamps, all handmade from shoji paper.

Each Akari, the Japanese word for "light," is handmade, beginning with the manufacture of washi paper from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The paper is then glued to a thin bamboo frame, creating a delicate yet powerful lighting sculpture.

The soft, warm glow of the light that is projected through the paper transforms "the harshness of electricity by turning the light of our origins, the sun, upside down so that its heat continues to fill our rooms at night," as Isamu Noguchi himself explained.

Like the beauty of fallen leaves and cherry blossoms, Noguchi wrote, Akari is "poetic and ephemeral." He liked to say, "All it takes to start a home is a room, a tatami, and an Akari." "
