16 animali is a wooden puzzle, cleverly designed to produce 16 different animal shapes, with a single continuous cut, from a single piece of wood.
It is one of the most famous examples of design applied to the field of children's toys.
The Puzzle 16 Animali, is a design by Enzo Mari in 1957, for the Italian Danese Milano.
At the end of the 1950s, Enzo Mari met the entrepreneur Bruno Danese, who launched the eponymous design brand described as a 'long-term project to bring art into everyday life'. With Danese, Enzo Mari created one of his most well-known and beloved pieces, the wooden puzzle 16 Animali. An object that was inspired by his research on Scandinavian children's toys and his own children. Each animal is designed as its own object, and it also fits perfectly within a minimalist puzzle structure: an exercise in formal creativity.
