Isamu Noguchi, 1946.

Freeform Sofa.

The Freeform sofa is a clear example of Noguchi's taste for sculptural lines, the shape of the sofa and ottoman are reminiscent of river stones. Noguchi himself describes his design as "soft rock". Thanks to their organic shape and the natural tones of the upholstery, they give a light and elegant feel despite their voluminous shape. The sculptural expressiveness of Noguchi's work is evident in the Freeform Sofa, a design completely different from any other of its time. Combined with the Ottoman, it composes a sculptural ensemble reminiscent of large boulders. The Freeform Sofa and the Ottoman were produced around 1950 in a limited series. The few original pieces that remain from that series today fetch very high prices at auctions. In 2002, the Vitra Design Museum began to manufacture the set as an authentic re-edition. The Freeform Sofa is not only suitable for living rooms but also for lobbies, hotels and shops.

As an accessory for the sofa, Noguchi also designed a small ottoman, which is the perfect complement to the Freeform sofa and is sold separately.
