The Ring Tawayara, has an iconic photograph where all the main designers come together, just when the group Memphis was launched, in 1981, showing their playful spirit and camaraderie, gathered behind the ropes, the group is also presented here in the role of combatants, although they are having a great time.
Tawaraya, named after a luxury hotel in Kyoto, is a quintessential fusion of East and West, combining the idea of the boxing ring with that of a Japanese bedroom. It has five standard tatami mats, the traditional flooring material of the Japanese house, and movable cushions, with adjustable lamps in each corner. Like the better-known Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata, Umeda was only briefly involved with Memphis. His involvement helped inform the group's international ambitions when it began.
